In January 2005, the office of the deputy prime minister, released legislation as a part of the building regulations (Part P), making it a legal requirement for nearly all electrical work in domestic dwellings, to have to be certificated.

This is mainly targeted towards such trades as plumbers, central heating installers, kitchen fitters, and general builders, who may, as a consequence of their main work activity, have to carry out a small amount of electrical work.

In order to carry out this work, any individual should hold Part P certification, which can be obtained by attending a training and assessment course.

Energyskills, based in Coalville, Leicestershire, have recently opened a new state of the art training facility, which can deliver the full range of course requirements to any individual, which will give any candidate, both the competence and the confidence to work safely, and more importantly, legally on domestic electrical installations.

Energyskills were pleased to welcome celebrity electrician, Billy Byrne to the centre, who commented on the new scheme “ I think its great for the safety of the industry that this is now a legal requirement, it should help stamp out the cowboys, and in turn raise the standards of electrical safety for the consumer”.
